pic: Old RI at Bras Basah RoadSecondary One in Raffles Institution (RI) was a cultural shock for many of us. Top students from primary schools all over Singapore had to compete with one another. As a result, some former top students ended up not even able to top their classes, not to mention the school. Thus, getting into the “A” class was already a feat by itself.

Among us from Selegie Integrated School, Seow Yew was one of the few who were admitted to Secondary 2A. There, he managed to survive the onslaught of the other top students and moved on to Secondary 3A Science.

“…Seow Yew was one of the few who managed to enter Secondary 2A …and moved on to Secondary 3A Science .”

While he coasted to Secondary 4B Science, we moved from the original RI building (where Raffles City is located today in 2002) to the new RI  (located at Grange Road at that time in 1972). The following year, he again was admitted to Pre-U 1 Science A and automatically proceeded to Pre-U 2 Science A.pic: Old RI at Grange Road

He applied and was nominated for a PSC Overseas/Mombusho scholarship to Japan. That enabled him to be enrolled in the Scholars’ Platoons when he was enlisted for National Service. @National Service

Having spent Secondary One with the Judo Club, I introduced several other boys to the sports at the beginning of Secondary Two. After several months, most of them dropped out after having been literally thrown around.

“He even achieved the rare honor of winning a bronze medal for Singapore in the 1981 SEA Games!”

However, Seow Yew persevered and later represented RI on many occasions. He even achieved the rare honor of winning a bronze medal for Singapore in the 1981 Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games)! Sports and Hobbies
