In those days, having a Pre-University qualification enabled most of us to be admitted to the Officer Cadet Training (OCT) course. In addition, a student will be admitted into a Scholars’ Platoon if he is nominated for a scholarship (such as Colombo Plan or SAF Scholarship).

In December 1974, many of us from Raffles Institution (RI) were enrolled in the Scholars’ Platoon's. By coincidence, Seow Yew and I were assigned to the same section of the same Scholars' Platoon.pic: OCT cadets during field training

“Those whose names were called were the fortunate ones awarded scholarships."

Every now and then, some officials from MINDEF would arrive and call out one or more names. Those whose names were called were the fortunate ones awarded scholarships. They will then be immediately deferred from National Service. Seow Yew was one of those. In April 1975, he left the OCT course and headed to Japan to continue his tertiary education.@University

In 1980, he came back and continued to serve the remaining period of his National Service. He was posted to the Artillery but he never completed the service. On 8 March 1982, the fatality took place.Funeral
